Welcome to the virtual home for the Honey Bees and Heather Farm, our lovely eight acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains midway between Asheville and Hendersonville, North Carolina where we have lived since 2000.
Our Farm includes:
· A 10 year old established Hillside Heather Garden featuring 100 plants of more than 50 varieties.
· A Pollinator Garden encircling the bee yard that features 75 plant species (most native to the area) — lovely examples of year-round nectar and pollen sources for our honey bees and native pollinators. An extensive herb garden, though not consisting of native plants, also provides a wonderful example of bee-friendly plantings that are lovely to look at (and to smell) and offer endless possibilities in the kitchen and in the health and beauty fields.
· The Woodland Gardens filled with fascinating shade-loving plants including ferns, hostas, hellebores, a collection of heucheras and wildflowers providing year round interest and some winter nectar and pollen sources for ‘the girls.’
· The Blueberry Patch with 12+ Northern Highbush, Rabbiteye and Southern Highbush varieties on trial. We enjoy a bounty of scrumptious blueberries from June till early October.
Besides our Certified Naturally Grown apiary, the entire property has been designated a ‘Bee Friendly Farm’ by Partners for Sustainable Pollination and has been certified as wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
While our farm is not open for retail sales or for drop-in visits/tours, we welcome your interest and are happy to schedule a visit, or let you know or our occasional on-site special events. Doug & Diane
